Weak downstream hammers demand-
Buyers hold back

Propylene
prices fell on May 19, as weaker downstream demand continued to dampen buying
interest. The July ICE Brent crude futures contract, which closed at
$76.14/b in Asia the previous day, was down 57c/b by 4:30 pm Singapore time. The
softer crude oil further impacted the propylene market. A Korean producer
said that the weak price of polypropylene is driving down prices for propylene. The
price differential between PP and Propylene was $5/mt on May 19, which is below
the $150/mt breakeven spread. There are just too many cargoes, when PDHs
start to ramp up their production rate in China," said an Asian purchaser
who pointed out that the swelling supply of PP in Asia puts pressure on
imports.
