WACKER Shifts to Biogenic Carbon from Fossil Coal in Silicon Manufacturing

WACKER has made a major step towards climate-neutral production of silicon by substituting fossil coal for biogenic carbon in its Holla facility, located in Norway. The company signed a long term supply agreement with Aymium a U.S. based producer of biogenic hydrogen and carbon. WACKER currently relies on coal for the reduction of quartz into metallurgical grade silicon. This process generates significant CO2 emissions. The company's goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by switching to biogenic CO2. Aymium intends to produce biogenic carbon at a new facility in the southeast United States. Christian Kirsten, member of WACKER’s Executive Board, said that the agreement would secure a large portion of the carbon requirement for the Holla facility, helping the company to reduce its carbon footprint.
