In the week leading up to May 24, there was
a low demand on the European spot market for polyethylene terephthalate. The European PET market saw a weak demand for
virgin material due to a lack of consumption by consumers ahead of summer. A trader
stated that it is "unbelievable" to have no demand during high season. A recycler
explained that the problem is a combination between high inflation and high
availability, as well as people staying at home. The price
difference between recycled PET and virgin PET prompted consumers to switch
