The price of US polyethylene Terephthalate for spot import dropped by $11/mt in the week ending August 28 due to lower ocean freight rates. Since the start of 2024, high ocean freight rates have been a problem for participants in the spot market. Container freight rates from Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia up to the US West Coast reached their highest level since mid-2022. The high container rates drove up the price of PET for import. Data shows that despite rates falling since early July the prices of delivered duty-paid material to the USWC remained unchanged from previous weeks.
