In
the week before May 19, European benzene prices rose, as rumors of an upcoming
supply crunch pushed up prices. On the basis of the backwardated structure
in place between May and July, the laycan for five to 30 days ahead delivery
was down $1.50/mt per day to $979/mt CIF-ARA. The market gained $34.50-39.75/mt
over the past week. Sources claim that there was concern about a possible
short squeeze on the market due to fires in the US. In the US, however,
there was little market reaction as the market liquidity was thin all week. The
strong demand from China could also cause a shortage of supplies in Europe as
South Korean cargoes, which are normally destined...
