Upcoming long Chinese holidays hamper trade / Buyers are disadvantaged by the lack of demand for polyester

Apr 30, 2024

The April 29th discussion for Asian MEG was lukewarm, with few trades being heard due to a lack in urgency. Some participants said that the upcoming Chinese long holidays, which begin on May 1, hindered trade. They claimed that buyers would not purchase cargoes immediately to avoid stock building up over the five day break. The activity could be restricted before the break, as no one wants to have a large inventory over the holidays. "Polyester demand hasn't improved significantly either, so MEG customers wouldn't be willing to take on any additional cargoes right now," said a Chinese trader.
