The European MTBE spot market activity
increased on June 1, with two mid-window deals done as part of the Market on
Close process. Finco and BP each sold 1,000 mt to
Lyondell for mid-window dates at $973-993/mt. One trader
said that the market was a bit sluggish, but could improve with the arrival of
summer driving season. Sources said that jet fuel, gasoline, and MTBE
all saw a lull in demand, possibly due to the cost-of-living crisis. The trader
did add that they felt a certain optimism about the MTBE forecast as it
remained competitive with other octanes. As the month moved
from June to August, the front-month gasoline-naphtha differential narrowed. It
went from $214.75/mt on May 31 to just $192.50/mt...
