Imports of intermediate purified
Terephthalic Acid into the US were encouraged by upstream volatility, US-based
Polyethylene Terephthalate sources stated in the week ending March 29. Sources said that PTA
buyers are choosing to import intermediate PTA from Asia because there is less
domestic supply and higher demand for gasoline blending. Sources also said that pre-pandemic freight rates are
encouraging this activity. According to
data from the International Trade Commission, January PTA imports were 59,147
mt. This is 43% more than the month and 33% more than the year. 92% of that figure was from North America, while 8% came
