- Thin activity ahead of benzene Contract Settlement- Styrene thinned over benzene on soft demand

The backwardated market structure led to a
decline in European benzene on May 22. A trader reported that the market activity was extremely
low. A wide range of buy and sell
interests were heard. The trading window for
the settlement of June contract prices opens at the end week, starting May 25. On May 22, the five-to-30-day forward delivery laycan price
was $974.50/mt CIF ARB, down $4.50/mt from the previous day. Styrene downstream offers fell on the day. The feedstock
benzene was assessed lower for prompt May dates than styrene. The spread between benzene & styrene is $10.75-15.86/mt.
This reflects a lack of demand from end users for styrene, and an abundance of
supply in the European market.
