The Asian styrene markets closed lower on
June 12 due to weakness in the upstream markets. As of 0830 GMT the front-month ICE Brent crude
contract fell $2.80/b, to $73.13/b. Upstream benzene also fell $37.33/mt, to
$754.67/mt. A trader said that fundamentals for upstream are
bad. In the week ending June 9, operating rates for
benzene-derived products, including styrene monmer, were reported to be
decreasing in general. Sources estimate that styrene operating rates in
China were at 66%. This represents a 1.6% decrease on the previous week. A second
trader in China said that some people expect east China inventory levels to
