Asian Styrene Monomer: Prices slip amid limited market activities heard / Downstream products in oversupply / SM East China inventory drops 5,400 mt in a week

CFR China styrene Monomer and FOB Korean markers were both $1,031.50/mt on Oct. 16, down $18.50/mt since the previous assessment. The market was quiet on Oct. 16 as some participants were away at a conference in Xiamen. Generally, demand in the market still remained weak, as downstream producers were also heard to be experiencing weak demand for SM derivative products, such as expandable polystyrene, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. There are not many deals available at the moment. A SM buyer said that there is a general oversupply of [downstream products]. Another market source said that China's SM inventories are high, and the market has become oversupplied. Prices have therefore fallen.
