Prices of Asian benzene fell on May 15, as
low downstream demand was still being heard. Sources said that the demand for gasoline
blending is slowing in the US. Sources in China reported that
downstream styrene manufacturers were beginning turnaround season. This
impacted upstream benzene demand. It was reported earlier that China's
Wanhua Chemical shut down its 650,000 mt/year Yantai styrene-monomer plant May
8 in North China. Sources estimate that the operating rates of
styrene-monomer in China dropped by 2% over the past week. East China's
domestic mark fell Yuan 65/mt in one day, to Yuan 6,658/mt. This is equivalent
to $829.36-849.76/mt if you use import-parity. CFR China
