Styrene gains $34/mt / July/Aug backwardation increases to plus $16/mt FOB Korea

Asian benzene rose $17/mt in the last trading session, to $1059/mt. This was due to a strong styrene market as well as an open import arbitrage opportunity in China. The upstream market movements were not as pronounced as the benzene market. The front-month ICE Brent futures rose 63 cents/b compared to the previous session, to $84.16/b at the Asian close. The C+F Japan mark for naphtha was up $8.75/mt in one day to $685.75/mt. The styrene markets, downstream, rallied the day. They gained $34/mt, reaching $1,178/mt CIF China. It was reported that the import arbitrage had opened in China. The M2 Domestic China Marker was priced at Yuan 8,885/mt or $1,085.08/mt based on import parity.
