As the ethylene/naphtha differential narrowed below $200/mt on May 14, it cast shadows over Asian steam cracker rates. Brokers lowered the swap time spread for the Mean of Japan Naphtha from June to July at $6.75/mt in midmorning Asian trading on May 14. This was a 50-cent/mt decrease compared to the previous close. According to market sources, the shrinking ethylene-naphtha split was due to the fact that the decline in ethylene price outpaced the fall in naphtha price amid weak downstream demand. Commodity Insights' CFR Northeast Asia ethylene to C+F Japan Naphtha spread was $187.88/mt in May 2013, up from a three-month low at $179.88/mt in May 6. However, it still remained below $200/mt.
