The market sentiment was still bearish, but
European naphtha recovered its prices on May 17. The spread between May and
June rose by $2.75/mt to be minus $1.25/mt. East-West spreads also increased as a result of the stronger
European pricing structure. The June spread was down $3.25/mt to 75 cents/mt. Sources say that despite the price rises on the day, the
sentiment was still bearish due to a subdued demand for petrochemicals. A source said, "We're not out of trouble yet." "Not until the petrochemical (demand) recovers." Sources said that gasoline blenders were in high demand for
higher-octane grades. This is especially true when the naphtha discounts to
