Rates of downstream operation to fall / PX production problems in Asia are of little help

Prices for Asian Paraxylene dropped on May 10, despite issues with production in some parts of Asia. This was due to an expected slowdown of downstream activity. Asian paraxylene was down $3/mt for the day, at $1.012/mt CFR unv1/China on May 10. Few traders believe that China's downstream operations rates will ease due to high inventories, which are putting pressure on profitability. Brokers in China said that some major polyester producers are likely to reduce their operation rates because of bloated inventories. The broker said that the high inventory of products was a factor in plans to reduce polyester plant operations.
