Asian mixed isomer xylene prices rose by $7/mt between May 24 and May 27, to $955.50/mt at FOB Korea, $969.50/mt at CFR Unv1 as well as $955.50/mt for CFR China. This was due to the fact that the upstream price of aromatics had increased. In Asian trade at 0830 GMT, July ICE Brent crude futures were up 99 cents at $82.25/barrel, while downstream paraxylene was up $3.67/mt to $1,043.67/mt for CFR Unv1/China. One trader stated that MX rose also because of PX "but not strongly", since PX moved up less than MX in May 27. The spread between toluene versus benzene, which reached a near 18-month high on May 27 of $184.33/mt, is improving margins in toluene proportionation units.
