India PTA: Prices drop amid weak demand / Polyester operating rates remain weak / CFR China-India Spread narrows to $67/mt

The price of Indian purified terephthalic acid CFR India dropped by $51/mt during the week ending Sept. 6, due to weak demand. Indian sources report polyester operating rates of 70%-72%. This indicates weak demand downstream, prompting producers to maintain lower rates. The Indian PTA buyer stated that "demand is weak and buyers have high levels of PTA inventory that they bought earlier in anticipation of prefestive demand." The India-China freight spread is expected to shrink if freights continue to fall. An Indian PTA purchaser said that PTA prices had dropped significantly in recent weeks due in part to continued weakness in demand.
