India PTA: Prices fall on low demand and falling freight / Demand weakens despite high inventories / CFR China-India Spread narrows to $44/mt

Prices of Indian purified Terephthalic Acid fell by $5/mt during the week ending Sept. 20, due to a persistently weak demand and a falling containerized freight rate from Asian countries. One buyer stated that "Freights are falling rapidly in all PTA exporting locations to India. The exception is the Dalian to India route." Containerized cargo rates varied widely, but were lower than last week. The Fright Rates for PTA shipments were quoted in a range between $19 and $30/mt by buyers, $27 to $30/mt by Thailand and $33/mt by South Korea. Sources on the buy-side said that while polyester operating rates in downstream were around 70-75%, there was a lack of demand due to an inventory glut.
