India PTA: Prices continue to fall amid low demand / Despite high inventories, demand remains low / CFR China-India Spread narrows to $50/mt

The price of Indian purified terephthalic acids CFR India fell $30/mt during the week ending September 13, due to a softening demand. Sources indicate that polyester operating rates are around 70%, which indicates a weak downstream demand. Buyers reported that freights from all PTAexporting destinations to India had dropped dramatically over the past week. According to an Indian PTA manufacturer, "downstream demand wasn't good and PTA buyer have a large inventory which is becoming difficult to liquidate due to the cheaper Chinese end product finding its way to India." Unknown to the buyer, downstream demand is not picking up despite high inventories. Sources suggest that the drop in freights will likely narrow the India-China PTA Spread further.
