PTA inventories continued to increase in China as the buying interest became less pronounced, which is putting pressure on prices and margins. PTA FOB China was $659/mt, down $4/mt for the day. The PTA FOB China averaged $669.40/mt in the week ending Sept. 6. PTA prices dropped dramatically throughout the week due to the continued decline in demand in China. Brokers in China reported that PTA inventories were 2.6 million mt in the week ending August 30 compared to 2.54 million in the previous week. A trader in China stated that the PTA producers are having difficulty moving their stockpiles and this is affecting upstream PX. The reason for the weak price was PTA.
