Asian PTA: Margins remain pressured amid poor downstream demand in China / Container freight costs surge / China PTA exports down 20% in Oct

PTA producers in Asia remained concerned as margins showed little signs of recovery while downstream demand in China remains largely depressed. PTA FOB China at $632/mt on Nov. 22, unchanged on the day. The weekly average was $3/mt higher on the week at $628.60/mt in the week ended Nov. 22. Meanwhile, container freights for shipping PTA exports have started going up, sources said. One PTA producer in Asia confirmed the sharp rise in freight costs citing prices to have "nearly tripled." With freight costs on the rise, PTA producers may now have to switch to bulk shipping, which in turn could compel them to combine several shipments into one, the same producer said.
