Asian PTA: Pricing bank on downstream inventories dropping / Lunar New Year Slowdown Not Sharp / PTA Turnarounds Line Up in Q1, Q2

PTA producers are relying on the decline in polyester downstream products and the upcoming turnarounds of China to revive spot prices. PTA FOB china was $679/mt, down $2/mt from the previous day. The average weekly price was $31/mt more than the previous week, at $673.20/mt for the week ending January 17. Sources said that PTA spot prices may continue to increase as the downstream activity in China will not be affected by a significant seasonal slowdown. PTA spot prices have increased in accordance with the upstream PX price, traders reported. This year's polyester downstream stocks have fallen to encouraging levels, which could encourage polyester factories to avoid an abrupt slowdown during Lunar New Year celebrations, according to market sources.
