Asian PTA: Pessimism grows ahead of new year / Inventories stay high / Outlook for new year bearish

Purified terephthalic acid producers in Asia continued to be bearish in the run-up to the new year as demand stayed sluggish while margins faced increasing pressure. PTA FOB China at $647/mt on Nov. 1, up $12/ mt on the day. In 2024, PTA producers faced an uphill task as downstream demand in China remained dormant, which in turn hurt their margins, sources said. PTA inventories in China continued to build, hurting margins badly, a producer in Asia said. Purified terephthalic acid inventories in China were around 2.71 million mt in the week to Oct. 25, compared with 2.75 million mt in the previous week, a trader in China said.
