Asian PTA: Falling $13/mt over the week due to lower PX and crude oil / Fundamentals remain weak / High inventories could continue to build

The FOB China price of purified terephthalic acids is lower. It was $646/mt on Sept. 13 - down $13/mt from the previous week. This is due to reduced paraxylene prices and crude oil. According to market sources, downstream polyester demand has not been as strong as expected in recent months. Sales are also expected to slow down toward the end the year. However, turnarounds at large PTA plants over the holiday season could ease some of the oversupply. According to a market source at a major Chinese producer, exports were lower than expected for September and the demand was weaker.
