Asian PTA: PTA Buyers Maintain Cautious Buying Approach / Inventories are not falling too low / Downstream weakness may limit interest in buying

PTA producers in China have continued to be cautious about buying PX for feedstock, despite the volatile price environment. PTA FOB China was $757/mt, down $2/mt for the day. PTA FOB China had averaged an 80 cents/mt increase in the week prior to August 2, at $754.60/mt. Sources said that PX prices continued to be low, but recently they have increased sharply due to some supply disruptions across Asia. A trader from Singapore stated that PTA producers in 2024 have chosen to avoid expensive PX cargoes in order to maintain their margins and profits. The trader stated that this year PTA producers have avoided purchasing spot cargo and kept low inventories. The trader said that this strategy had worked well for PTA manufacturers.
