Domestic prices in East China boosted by tight supply / Thin trade discussion in India / China-India price differential widens to $11/mt

On May 16, the price of methanol in CFR China increased by $5/mt due to strong demand. On May 16, a deal was made for a 5,000-mt cargo that will arrive in China mid-June at a price of $315/mt. A similar cargo had been traded for $312/mt CFR China a day earlier. Sources on the market said that a lack of non-Iranian methanol in China and Iranian methanol in May, as well as planned turnarounds at methanol factories in inland China, boosted domestic prices. A trader stated that "Chinese domestic demand for methanol has increased since the second half 2023...the economy is recovering...especially manufacturing and exports," Longzhong Information Services reported that methanol inventories along China's eastern and southern coasts decreased 13% in one week, to 558.700 mt on May 15....
