Prices of Asian polypropylene were higher in the week ending Oct. 9 as Chinese participants returned to the market after the Golden Week holiday. Price movements are primarily influenced by sentiment, rather than a rise in demand. Several trade sources have noted that the spot PP market in China has low trading volumes. Chinese domestic raffia price rose Yuan 50/mt over the past week, but dropped Yuan 100/mt the next day to Yuan 7,650/mt. A Chinese trader stated that macroeconomic optimism had been overly inflated and the market was now realigning itself with fundamentals of supply and demand. There is still some optimism about supply support, as Chinese PP plant turnarounds are scheduled in October. This could potentially ease supply pressure.
