Asian PP : Chinese prices drop $5/mt in a week due to weaker yuan and sluggish Chinese demand / China domestic PP Demand Weaker than Expected Ahead of Lunar New Year / Buying activity in SE Asia is dwindling as the year-end holidays near

In the week ended Dec. 11, import prices for polypropylene in China fell slightly due to a weaker Chinese yuan. Trade sources reported that domestic demand fell short of expectations in the run-up to Lunar New Year. This further dampened market sentiment. China domestic PP raffia price increased by Yuan 10/mt for the day, but fell by Yuan 50/mt over the course of the week to Yuan 7,450/mt. A Chinese producer stated that the current maintenance of PP plants is supporting prices. "Demand for raffia in China is low, but prices have been supported by this," he said. Traders report that buyers are cautious and expect prices to fall as new capacity in China comes online, and plants restart operations in mid-December after maintenance.
