Propylene Oxide Prices Fall as Tariffs and Oversupply Weigh on the Markets

Propylene (PO) prices were under pressure in March, due to persistent oversupply and weak downstream demand. Prices in Asia fell after mid-February due to a lack of consumption by downstream polyether polyols, and polyurethane. In Europe and the USA, demand was sluggish, while high inventories kept market sentiment low. After mid-February in China, PO prices declined due to low downstream consumption and an oversupply. Polyether polyols (PEP) and polyurethane (PU) industries struggled with a weak industrial output that limited procurement. The supply was further strained by ongoing capacity expansions, and the resumption of production after Lunar New Year. Despite some PO plants being maintained, such as SK Chemicals, in South Korea, and Nanjing Jinling Huntsman, in China, the effect was minimal due to high stocks. The PO supply was high...
