In the week ending October 25, the Asian glycols markets weakened, although prices of monoethylene glycol recovered late in the period. Market sources reported that some purchasing activity occurred in China. They cited the stable polyester demand as well as operating rates. According to sources in the market, operating rates at China's polyester plants remained at 92%. This supported MEG demand. The domestic Chinese market was quiet, with the majority of deals being completed on a need-to-know basis. Many market participants expressed uncertainty over the direction of prices due to volatile crude oil futures. Some participants in the upstream sector were watching closely the ethylene price movement, since a recent increase could affect MEG-ethylene profit margins that had been improving over the past month.
