The Asian propylene price remained unchanged on September 4 due to stable fundamentals in demand and supply. In September, the average operating rate of South Korean steam crackers that use naphtha was 84%. This is up from 82%. Sources said that South Korea's YNCC, LG Chemical, and YNCC were considering reducing the operating rates of their naphtha steam crackers in an effort to cut costs. Meanwhile, South Korea demand for propylene is also tepid. Some market participants believe that the planned maintenance of GS Caltex naphtha steam cracker will cause a shortage in supplies from end-September through October.
