EDC market weakens on increasing supplies / South Korea's Hanwha shuts down VCM plant to turnaround

On April 11. EDC's Asian ethylene-dichloride prices remained stable from week to week at $320/mt CIF Far East Asia, and $340/mt CIF Southeast Asia amid a slowdown in downstream activity. The near-term trend was bearish, in line with the weakening of downstream markets and a possible influx US cargoes. USG EDC prices were down $5/mt from week to week, at $240/mt. According to sources, the EDC downstream market was seen as weakening due to a sluggish market. The outlook for the upstream ethylene market was also bleak due to rising ethylene supply from LPG cracking and a lack of demand because of negative downstream margins.
