Market sources reported that Asian
monoethylene glycol was stable at $465-480/mt CFR China on June 21, despite a
lack of trade. Operating rates remained at 40%-50%
because of poor margins. The inventories at Chinese ports are
reported to be less than one million mt. This is a stable figure compared to
the previous week. The traders reported that the global slowdown in
interest rates and inflation had begun to cause an economic slowdown. Interest
rates are increasing, making it more difficult to finance activities. Sources
said that despite the fact that coal-based production costs are close to
breakeven, coal-based units still run at low rates because of weak demand. Some
producers are trying to make specialized grades rather than the commodity...
