Polyester operating rates, demand stable / Demand for import cargoes weak

May 07, 2024

Prices of Asian MEG up May 6 as trading resumed after the five-day-long Labor Day holidays in China. Some restocking interest was seen in the domestic Chinese markets as operating rates at polyester plants remained at an estimated 92%, a market source said. Overall demand in the polyester sector was stable, an MEG producer said, which helped support price discussions on the day. However, buying interest in the import markets was weak, said an analyst based in China. "The polyester market should enter its lull period soon, so buyers are not too keen to commit to import cargoes at this time as the downstream outlook is still unclear," said the analyst.
