Polyester operating rates drop to 89% during the week / A typical lull in downstream demand

The early-week strength of the Asian MEG markets weakened during the second half week, as lower operating rates at downstream polyester plants weighed on discussions. The relatively stable polyester demand supported some MEG restocking, but lower polyester prices and the anticipated start of the typical quiet period limited discussions about prices, which caused prices to fall for the week. According to sources in the market, the operating rates of polyester plants were around 89% on May 10. This is down from an estimated 92% during the previous week. Operating rates will continue to drop at polyester plants as sales slow down.
