Philippines' JG Summit closes naphtha cracker over technical issues / Thailand's SCG declares Force Majeure on chemical supply from two ports

Asian propylene prices were flat to slightly lower during the week ending May 10, due to a bearish outlook for the near term and poor downstream demand. Meanwhile, attention was focused on several plant failures in Southeast Asia. A source within the company confirmed May 10 that JG Summit, in the Philippines, had shut down its naphtha steam cracker on May 9 because of technical problems. The cracker is capable of producing 480,000 mt/year ethylene, as well as 220,000 mt/year propylene and between 70,000 and 80,000 mt/year butadiene. The same source stated, "We plan to restart on the weekend...we have already prepared for restart. So [it is not a big issue]". We will evaluate further to determine if BTX can be sold later.
