Asian PET: Prices climb amid stronger feedstock costs / NE Asia PET offers to climb upstream gains / China's polyester fiber and yarn plants operating rates have reached 90%

In Asia, the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) market experienced a positive trend in the week ending October 2, mainly due to higher feedstock prices. Market sources reported that PET prices in Northeast Asia continued to increase, supported by increases in crude and feedstock upstream costs. Purified terephthalic acids increased $34/mt on a weekly basis to $688/mt F.R.C. China by Oct. 2. Monoethylene glycol also rose $15/mt, to $560/mt. A Mainland Chinese producer increased its offer to nearly sell out October's volumes, riding the upward trend. The producer stated that "our latest offer was $860/mt which is the highest level since September". Some sources, however, have expressed a different view, suggesting that current prices are slightly inflated. Producers may also be aiming to raise prices before China's Golden Week.
