In the week ending March 12, Asian polyethylene prices continued to fall as concerns about oversupply, increasing stockpiles, and a sluggish market sentiment weighed heavily on the market. Bottle-grade PET FOB Northeast Asia was $790/mt on March 12, down by $5/mt from the previous week. PET FOB Southeast Asia dropped $5/mt, to $865/mt during the same time period. Market sources claim that the outlook for bottle grade PET is uncertain because of a sluggish market and increasing stockpiles. This has led Chinese producers to lower their operating rates by around 70%. Many producers have been forced to make turnarounds due to increased production costs and low margins.
