Asian PET: Strength upstream supports cost support / Buyers cautious but ongoing discussions in SE Asia / Chinese polyester plant operating rates stable at 88% - Sep 27, 2024

In the week ending September 25, prices in Southeast Asia were slightly lower than in Northeast Asia, but rebounded in Northeast Asia. On Sept. 25, the price of purified terephthalic acids rose by $15/mt, to $652/mt F.C. China. Monoethylene glycol also rose by $20/mt. A Chinese trader stated that raw material prices have increased, including crude oil. This has pushed the PET price up. A regional PET producer in Southeast Asia revealed that inquiries have increased recently, despite a weak overall market outlook. The recent low prices were helpful. The market is still very cautious. [But] we've received more inquiries and larger quantities", the producer stated.
