In the week ended August 28, the Asian polyethylene-terephthalate spot market FOB Northeast Asia remained steady, while the market FOB Southeast Asia continued to decline. Prices in Northeast Asia, and particularly in China, remained stable despite a slowdown in demand. Sources said that market participants are closely monitoring the new production capacity set to begin soon. This could increase supply, and possibly put downward pressure on price. A 600,000 mt/year capacity is expected to be online in South China soon, which will likely increase supply, a Chinabased stated. A second Chinese producer also shared the same view: "It is hard to predict what will happen but as some plants complete maintenance, it will likely increase supply."
