Asian PET: Prices surge amid rising costs / PTA up to $34/mt, MEG up to $12/mt / China's polyester market slows down ahead of Lunar New Year - Jan 16, 2025

The price of polyethylene terephthalate in Asia rose during the week ending Jan. 15. This was due to rising crude oil prices and costs for feedstock. Bottle-grade PET FOB Northeast Asia is $805/mt. This represents a $20/mt increase week over week. FOB Southeast Asian PET prices also rose $25/mt over the past week, to $900/mt on Jan. 15. In the upstream sector, the price of purified terephthalic was $34/mt higher week-over-week at $673/mt F.R. China on Jan. 15 while monoethylene glycol rose $12/mt over that same period to $443/mt F.R. China. The week ended January 15 saw a slowdown in demand as Chinese producers lowered their offers in response to rising feedstock costs.
