PET Asian PET: Weakens amid softening upstream / PET exports in NE and SE Asia are slightly down / China's PET Operating Rate Estimated at 86%

In the week leading up to August 21, Asian polyethylene-terephthalate market prices weakened due to weaker markets in the upstream. According to a source, the export markets in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia both dipped a little bit during the week of Aug. 21 due to lower feedstock costs. A producer said that PET's price is tracking the cost of upstream feedstock. Purified terephthalic acids fell by $22/mt in a week, to $709/mt CFR China on August 21. The producer reported that despite the persistently weak demand, sales were up this month as compared to last month's muted activity. There was no sign of significant inventory pressure.
