Toluene prices remain unattractive for blending / Tightness persists despite low production rates

The demand for toluene on the European spot market was weak during the week ending April 26, as gasoline blenders continued their preference for cheaper octane-based components over toluene, despite the change in gasoline summer specifications. Consumers have reported that the demand for toluene is not increasing despite changes in gasoline specifications. A producer stated that the pull for toluene is only a last resort. The downstream TDIs are pulling less from the chemical players, resulting in a softer demand. Despite the weak demand, toluene supply remains tight. Producers are running at lower rates due to high operating costs and low demand. A consumer stated that there was no demand for the product, but it was also not available.
