The price of European benzene fell on July
3, following market speculation about the possibility of arbitrage between
Europe and the US. On July 3, the five-to-30-days
forward delivery laycan price was $858.25/mt CIF/ARA, a decrease of $25.25/mt
compared to June 30. A trader reported that August European prices
were being impacted by the competitive US prices on this day. This gave
the impression that an arbitrage route was opening into Europe. However,
traders were skeptical. A trader stated, "I don’t think
people are going to do it yet." "There's
not much to it." The second trader said that he did not think
arbitrage was feasible except on paper. The price of
benzene delivered five to thirty days in advance...
