Falling prices of polyester limit MEG demand / Expectations for further rate cuts leads to a bearish outlook

May 22, 2024

MEG prices in Asia fell on May 21, as buyers pulled back due to persistent weakness of key polyester downstream markets. Some market sources stated that although the decreases in operating rates at polyester plants in the week ending May 17 were less than expected, the falling prices of Polyester weighed on MEG buyers' appetite. Several market participants believe that the run rates of polyester plants in China will be further reduced as the lull seasons approaches. This could further hurt MEG demand.
