The European toluene industry suffered a
drop in demand in the week ending March 17 due to weaker crude oil markets and
lower demand. Consumers in chemicals had limited demand for more toluene. Due to unfavorable economics when blending
toluene, blenders found their prices unattractive. A trade was
heard done during the week at a premium to gasoline of $205-225/mt. One
producer said that at current spot price levels, production margins would be
below breakeven, causing producer to limit output. The near-term sentiment
leaned bearish, as participants showed reduced confidence for a pivot in demand
as crude oil prices fell and wider events such as the bankruptcy of Silicon Valley
Bank and issues at Credit Suisse bank exacerbated uncertainty in the market.
