The polystyrene trade was very slow for the
week ending May 31. Demand has been low and the market is waiting to see the
outcome of the upstream monomer contract settlements to determine the pricing
direction in June. A
distributor reported that buying at the end was very limited. The expected decline in prices of upstream monomer contracts
that will be passed on to the polystyrene market was responsible for this. The contract prices for polystyrene for general use were up
Eur20/mt from the previous month at Eur1,780/mt. This was the most common increase in settlement for the
month. Market sources also reported increases up to Eur55-52/mt, at the beginning
