Market sources reported that the South Asian polyethylene markets fell during the week ending October 23 due to a lack of import activity amid high inventories and low prices from local producers. The market sources attribute the weakness to Diwali, as many traders have expressed a desire to liquidate their inventory. All other grades fell in value, while the LDPE general-purpose grade remained unchanged on the day or week. The participants were confident that after the Diwali holiday, Middle East offers would be firmer as the demand would stabilize. However, some did not agree. The participants expected that domestic producers would continue to use discount programs, which will not lead to a firm price.
