Asian PET market softens as upstream costs fall / Weaker outlook for prices across regions / Chinese polyester plant operating rate rises to 88%

In the week ending Sept. 18, prices in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia were lower. Purified terephthalic acids fell by $4/mt per week, to $633/mt F.R.C. China on September 18. According to a Southeast Asia producer, the lower price forecast was due to a weakening of buying interest in Southeast Asia. The producer said that low buying activity was normal during this season. According to a trader, the domestic polyester yarn and fibre market in China has shown some improvement. Another producer stated that despite this, the overall market is still impacted by the fall in crude oil futures and the decrease in upstream costs.
